However, you’re probably wondering exactly why should you invest in a water wall for early years learning? There are a number of benefits on how it can boost the development of early learners. We’ll list our favourite reasons below so you can really see exactly what you can do.

Water Walls Help Develop Motor Skills in Early Years Learners

Being a teacher of an early years learner requires a holistic approach to development. You cannot just focus on your subject, you need to look at the child as a whole. At this age, you are attempting to develop them into little functioning humans. This is why developing motor skills is so important

Without motor skills, children will not be able to carry out basic tasks as soon as they should.  How can you expect them to be able to write when they can’t hold the pencil properly? Development of general fine motor skills, therefore, benefits them greatly.

Water walls really help children develop in their early years. Children will increase their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through actions like pouring, squirting, scrubbing, stirring and squeezing. Using these natural materials really helps with children’s development.

With water being so slippery, it really allows children to develop their grip strength. It does this in an exciting way as these textures will be very new to them. Mastering grip strength will have them writing before you know it. There is also a sensory element, with the slipperiness and different temperatures of water. We at Red Monkey really believe in the development of senses in children.

Develop Problem Solving Skills in Early Years Students With Water Walls

We all know how important problem-solving skills are in life. Every employer will be looking for these skills and they will need to be demonstrated daily for most skilled jobs. Therefore it is essential children start to learn these skills as soon as possible.

A water wall gives early years students a great opportunity to develop these skills. It helps teach them cause and effect as well as allowing them to experiment. Watching different objects interact with water, seeing what floats and what sinks really makes this apparent. When they experiment with this new knowledge it encourages them to use their imagination, develops creative thinking which plays an important role in problem-solving.

Water Walls Develop Language

Developing language in early learners is a two-pronged approach. Dedicated lessons and learning through their environment and exploration. While having English class is useful, early learners benefit so much from just being around speakers and having fun with. You’ll find they’re much more willing to speak if it’s about something they like.

This means you should converse with them about what they’re doing. Ask them about what it is they like or do they know what it is? Imagine then, the number of new words they will learn while having fun with water and having conversations about it! At strategic moments during play with water, you should ask intentional questions to extend children’s thinking, expand their memory and use evidence to support their ideas.

Develop Social Skills and Improve Mental Wellbeing
The development of social skills obvious stands your child in good stead for the rest of their life. You want them to become social as early as possible, as it will help them succeed as well as express themselves if they are upset or don’t like something, therefore allowing them to protect themselves in a non-violent way. Many developments come from observing parents behaviours, but school and playtime can have a massive effect too.

This shared water wall space can really help with the development of social skills. It encourages role play and crucial social skills like cooperation and sharing. They learn to work with one or several children, to take turns and share the space and accessories with their friends.

It also helps mental wellbeing through its tranquillity. Water has a very calming effect and can give children some much-needed downtime. Repetitive tasks like pouring and scooping water can allow children to learn to concentrate on one task, allowing them to unwind and relax. The opposite can also be true, allowing them to release energy through water play by splashing can allow them to release any excess energy they have.

Increased Understanding of Science and Maths

As mentioned before, children can observe how things interact with the water. This fantastic investigative resource will develop children’s understanding of scientific topics such as gravity, flow, the water cycle, water recycling, source to mouth and kinetic energy. It can also teach children about mass, volume and the weight of materials – see how much water volume you can save from splashing on the floor!

One great example is learning about quantities, such as full, empty and half full. They can experiment with buckets and cups to understand how containers work. Use these containers to measure, compare volumes and observe motion when poured. It’s a great way to understand measuring and will have them performing science experiments in no time.
