Heston Primary School
What was needed?
Red Monkey Play was invited to Heston Primary School to help brainstorm ideas on how to best develop their outdoor play area. The school had one pot of funding for both the EYFS and KS1/KS2 areas.
The school wanted the KS1/KS2 area to incorporate their existing tree but was not sure whether they wanted a sensory area or a climbing unit. The head teacher picked out the Island Challenge unit as a possible solution for the first phase of development. Red Monkey advised the school that within their budget they should focus on the physical aspect first and add to the area in a different phase to include sensory features.
In the EYFS area, the school wanted a climbing unit that would help prepare the children to move into the KS1/KS2 playground.
The challenge was to carry out the installation in a safe manner during COVID-19!
What we did
The designers created a bespoke unit, similar to the Island Challenge, but that was more suited to Heston Primary. The end result was a Woodland Themed Tree House unit that wrapped around the existing tree. The idea behind this unit was to create a space where the children could explore their physical skills while also using their imaginations in a role play capacity. The unit was designed to leave enough space around it in order to have the ability to add in different sensory features for future development of the area.
Green Play Grass was added around the unit to keep the area looking as natural as possible. The minimum requirement for health & safety standards was suggested to keep cost down and budget open for the EYFS area.
In the EYFS area, the nature mound unit was selected with the addition of a tangle climber. While this unit it meant specifically for EYFS children, adding a tangle climber added a bit more challenge to get the children ready for the KS1/KS2 playground.
