Leicester Grammar Junior School

The brief

The Early Years playground at Leicester Grammar was looking tired and in need of some inspiration. The area was situated directly outside the classrooms and was covered in tarmac or grass which became easily flooded. The Deputy Head, Mrs Strong, contacted Red Monkey to create an engaging playground installation and outdoor space which the children could use all year round.

The result

Our Head Designer planned an inspirational nautical theme for the flooring at the school. The playground flooring is a mix of dark blue, light blue and a sandy yellow Wet-Pour. In the ‘sea’ floats our installed Crow’s Nest pirate ship, perfect for role play adventures. Where the school had boggy grass they now have Play grass, creating a fantastic sensory and physical experience. Children can climb and roll on the Grass Mound and Tunnel, or follow the multi-coloured sensory path around their delightful new playground installation.

The new outdoor learning zone was opened at a star-studded event. Team GB basketball player Drew Sullivan cut the ribbon in front of proud staff, parents, children and our own Red Monkey! Everyone loved the new area and the quality of the service/products in the playground. Pupils were treated to cakes and drinks, but were far more interested in exploring their new playground. The Headteacher, Caroline Rigby, even agreed to star in our promotional video. The playground installation has changed the way the pupils learn outside and is in keeping with the high standards set at Leicester Grammar Junior School.
