Benefits of Wooden Outdoor Play Equipment

The saying goes that young children are like sponges, they’ll absorb information so quickly. Whether it’s from being around adults talking, watching them complete tasks, or doing things themselves. Their minds develop fast. This doesn’t mean we should just leave them to it. It is our job to encourage and facilitate all forms of development with our wooden outdoor playground equipment.

Benefits of Wooden Outdoor Play Equipment

Kids are naturally drawn to playing outside and there are numerous benefits of outdoor play: it allows them to explore their environment, develop muscle strength and coordination, and gain self-confidence. Playing actively outdoors also increases flexibility, fine and gross motor skills, and is related to the development of a wide variety of physical skills, including those involved in sports.

Children have a great need for physical exercise and activity, they love a chance to use their muscles to run, swing, jump, skate and ride a bike, and to be out in the fresh air and sunshine. They like to use their whole body when they play outdoors and find such physical activities interesting and challenging.

Many of us may already be well-versed in the benefits of outdoor play, whether in the back garden or more public areas like schools and parks. For those that aren’t, or for those who want a bit of a refresher, we’ve put together a few thoughts on some of the benefits of outdoor play. Let’s look at some of the benefits in more detail.

Learning Through Play

We believe at Red Monkey Play that wooden outdoor play equipment should be varied and provide children with ample opportunity to learn. We provide children with a new and interesting environment to explore, how often do people have pirate ships at home after all? Check out some great game ideas for our wooden pirate ship to see all the ways children can learn using it.

This varied landscape is part of how we work. By capturing children’s imaginations, our playground equipment inspires exploration, learning and development. It is far more varied than even the most creative home environments. It lets children be out increasing their experience of the world around them from within safe boundaries, taking in a hundred different sights, sounds and smells from the world around them, whether consciously or subconsciously.

Developing Their Creative Side

Stepping outside really helps develop a child’s creativity. The new open environments really allows their imagination to go wild. Skills like problem-solving, role play and artistic tasks take on a whole new level in the outdoors, especially for a child.

We try to encourage this with the opportunity for role play. Role play is a great chance for children to develop. Our playground equipment allows some real opportunities for children to explore through roleplay. The children at Ashmout School developed lots of creativity and social skills roleplaying as a pirate, imagining new exciting scenarios on the sea with all their friends.

How Wooden Outdoor Play Equipment Can Improve Health

The first thing you probably think of when associating outdoor play equipment and health is exercise. You’d be right to think that too, as having children associate the outdoors and exercise with fun can lead to a more healthy lifestyle overall. We aim to include lots of ways for a child to stay healthy and undergo some physical development when constructing new play areas. We really aim to bring a positive association with the outdoors.

There are many other passive health benefits from wooden outdoor play equipment too. Being outside allows them to get vitamin D from the sun as well as some fresh air. Most people in the UK are vitamin D deficient, and this can lead to mental health issues, so getting children out there and soaking up the sun is great for their health. It’s believed it can help reduce anxiety in children too.

Developing Social Skills

With outdoor space usually being less crowded and confined than indoors, it can actually have a subconsciously calming effect on many children, particularly in terms of developing social relationships. As the outdoor play areas are all communal, it encourages children to learn to cooperate with each other.

Whether playing in large or small groups, children will need to cooperate and communicate. This can link quite closely to role play, deciding who’s going to be who and who’s going to do what. It can even be something as simple as navigating past someone on the climbing frame and communicating that.

It Builds Independence and Confidence

Classrooms and lessons are designed with structure in mind. Structure makes a child feel safe and secure, which is appropriate for these settings. Outdoor play flips this on its head. It is far more unstructured. The way that kids play in nature has a lot less structure than most types of indoor play. There are infinite ways to interact with outdoor environments, from the backyard to the park to the local hiking trail or lake, and letting your child choose how he treats nature means he has the power to control his own actions.

This all obviously needs to be managed, which is why schools employ supervisors. We can provide some management through wooden outdoor play equipment. Our outdoor wooden play equipment provides some barebones structure for them to explore and play with. This really gives them a sense of independence and psychologically, the sense of space and new interactions offered by an outdoor environment has an empowering effect on a child.

Wooden Outdoor Play Equipment Helps Them Become a Little Explorer

Linking back to the previous point, the more confident and independent the child, the more likely they’ll explore exciting things. This unstructured style of play mixed with confidence allows kids to explore and interact meaningfully with their surroundings. They can think more freely, design their own activities, and approach the world in inventive ways.

Having a sense of exploration in their mindset will really help them develop as human beings over time. It is an incredibly useful and transferrable skill to develop. Whether they’re exploring the surroundings of the natural world, exploring their skills and abilities in new settings, or exploring new social dynamics in a more expansive environment, there’s so much at play.
